Lionel Messi’s farewell match with Argentina’s national team is not only a significant sporting event, but also a major economic milestone for the country’s football.

According to a sports economics platform, Argentina will face Benin on October 6 at Buenos Aires' Monumental Stadium in what the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has billed as a farewell match for the team's captain.

The AFA has announced ticket prices ranging from 90,000 Argentine pesos for the Popular section to 480,000 pesos for the most expensive seats. Tickets for children aged 3 to 10 in the Popular section are priced at 29,000 pesos. Other seats are priced at 180,000, 320,000, 320,000, 450,000, and 480,000 pesos respectively. Tickets will be sold online via the Deportick platform.

The pricing suggests that the AFA has attempted to reflect the economic value of a "historic event" in the ticket sales structure. However, ticket revenue is only one aspect of the match's economy, with the Monumental Stadium's current capacity officially declared by River Plate as 85,018 people.

If the entire stadium capacity were sold at the cheapest price of 90,000 pesos, the hypothetical gross ticket revenue would be approximately 7.65 billion pesos. Conversely, selling the entire capacity at 480,000 pesos would generate around 40.8 billion pesos. However, these figures are not realistic income forecasts, as different seats have varying prices and some capacity may be allocated to guests, event staff, media, and organizational commitments.

In a mid-range scenario, assuming an average real ticket price of 250,000 pesos and selling the entire capacity of 85,018 people, the gross ticket revenue would reach approximately 21.3 billion pesos. This figure is purely a scenario calculation, and the AFA has not yet announced the match's final revenue.

However, the match's economic significance extends beyond ticket sales. Messi's presence could boost demand for jerseys and memorabilia, advertising, VIP and hospitality services, transportation, restaurants, hotels, and other match-day services. The introduction of a special farewell jersey for Messi also highlights the event's separate commercial and marketing potential.

From a sports economics perspective, it is essential to distinguish between the match's direct revenue and its broader economic impact. While ticket revenue is calculable, the event's actual turnover could include sales of official merchandise, advertising contracts, hospitality services, media, sports tourism, and fan spending in Buenos Aires.

Messi's final appearance in the Argentine jersey is not just a football match; it exemplifies how "star capital" is transformed into a multi-layered commercial and media product in sports economics. The event's value for organizers will surpass the revenue generated from selling stadium seats.
