There is a huge gap between Iran’s sports economy and the rest of the world.
A meeting was held to discuss the major challenges facing the sports economy, with the aim of identifying obstacles and developing financial infrastructure.
A meeting to review the framework for studying macro indicators of Iran’s sports economy was held on September 31, according to a report by a specialized sports economy platform, citing the Club of Journalists. The meeting was attended by Ahmad Dehnamali, Minister of Sports and Youth, Mohammad Reza Dashti, Deputy for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, and several sports economy experts.
The meeting was convened jointly to conduct a comprehensive review of the challenges, obstacles, and factors affecting the sports economy, given the sector’s small contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
During the meeting, a statistical report was presented on the share of the sports economy in GDP and employment across various countries worldwide, with a comparison to Iran’s sports sector. The aim was to research and examine existing gaps using a professional approach based on the latest global technologies.
According to the latest data presented at the meeting, the global macro sports economy is estimated at $2,300 billion, while Iran’s sports sector contributes approximately $16 billion to the global economy annually.
Research studies indicate that the largest share of the global sports economy is allocated to television broadcasting, advertising, nutrition, services, and sports technologies. Other sectors include competitive sports, sports tourism, public participation, physical activities, and the production of sports-related industries.
Experts present at the meeting shared their perspectives and experiences in this field. It was decided that a research phase would be initiated to establish a national system for measuring and monitoring the sports economy, with the goal of creating conditions for the economic growth of Iranian sports within the next two years.
The Deputy for Legal and Parliamentary Affairs at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance also expressed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate and support the Ministry of Sports and Youth in this endeavor, including through tax generation and facilitation initiatives.
