A study of the factors influencing spectator attendance at women’s football matches.
What factors draw fans to women's soccer stadiums?
A study has examined the factors influencing demand for women’s football spectators in three European countries, including the role of match outcome uncertainty and other factors affecting fan attendance, according to the specialized sports economics platform.
The study focuses on women’s football matches in England, France, and Germany, and investigates one of the oldest concepts in sports economics: "outcome uncertainty."
According to this theory, the more unpredictable a match’s outcome, the more attractive it becomes to spectators, as closer competition can create greater motivation to attend the stadium.
However, the research findings indicate that this relationship varies across countries.
While no significant evidence was found in England and France of a direct impact of match outcome uncertainty on spectators’ decision to attend the stadium, such evidence was found in Germany.
The research also shows that factors such as team quality, match importance, and guest team status can influence the number of spectators.
This finding is particularly important from a sports economics perspective, as the development of the women’s football market is not limited to increasing the number of matches or creating more competition.
Fan experience, match quality, club brand, marketing, star presence, and competition importance can also contribute to increasing spectator demand.
For clubs seeking to increase revenue from women’s football, this is economically significant. Increasing attendance can generate opportunities for ticket revenue, as well as sales of merchandise, advertising, sponsorship, and direct engagement with fans.
Therefore, understanding the economic behavior of fans should be a key focus of commercial development in women’s football.
