Josh Wander, the founder of 777 Partners, has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors and lenders.

On October 15, 2026, Josh Wander, the founder and former CEO of investment firm 777 Partners, pleaded guilty to financial fraud and securities fraud charges in a New York federal court, according to the specialized sports economics platform. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that, as part of a plea agreement, he has agreed to forfeit at least $500 million in proceeds linked to the fraudulent scheme.

Prosecutors said the case involves a multi-year scheme to defraud lenders and investors. The charges include providing false information about the company’s financial status, using assets with questionable ownership or collateral, and manipulating bank documents. Sentencing is scheduled for March 1, 2027.

The case is significant for the sports industry because 777 Partners had invested in several football clubs, including Hertha Berlin (Germany), Genoa (Italy), Standard Liege (Belgium), and Vasco da Gama (Brazil). The company’s attempt to acquire English club Everton also failed in 2024.

While this case alone does not prove wrongdoing by investor-owned clubs, it highlights the risks clubs face when relying on investors whose financial status and funding sources have not been thoroughly vetted.

In the multi-club ownership market, investors often operate across several leagues and countries through a single portfolio. This structure can create opportunities for academy development, knowledge exchange, and resource management, but if there is a lack of financial transparency or a crisis in the parent company, problems can spread to multiple clubs.

For club managers, investigating an investor’s background, the source of funds, debt structure, and long-term financing capacity should be part of the ownership evaluation process. A high proposed value alone does not guarantee financial stability.
