The National Football League is partnering with a private equity firm to expand its investment activities.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) has partnered with private investment firm General Atlantic to expand its investment activities, according to a report by a specialized economics and sports platform. The deal, announced in the week ending October 22, 2026, will leverage the NFL’s investment arm, 32 Equity, to grow its presence in sports-related businesses.

According to InvestmentNews, the partnership will focus on areas such as media, sports technology, fan engagement, and sports-related businesses. The financial details of the agreement and the initial capital allocation were not disclosed in the published report.

This development highlights the evolving role of sports leagues. They are no longer just organizers of competitions and sellers of media rights; they can also benefit from the growth of various sectors of the sports economy by investing in technology companies, service platforms, and complementary businesses.

For MLS, this strategy could enable the identification of new technologies, the development of fan-related products, and the establishment of business relationships with companies that will play a more prominent role in the future of the sports industry. However, the economic success of this model depends on the quality of investment selection, risk management, and the ability to create long-term value.

However, sports leagues entering corporate investment also face risks, including potential conflicts of interest with commercial partners, overvaluation of technology companies, and difficulty in exiting low-return investments. Therefore, governance structure and independence of investment decisions are crucial.

For leagues and federations in Iran, this model could inspire the creation of specialized investment funds; however, financial transparency, risk limits, investment management independence, and the definition of return criteria must be established first.
